| Our
tradition started in 1841 when Isaac P. Bedell founded the Funeral
Home. He was a carpenter working for Comodore Vanderbilt and also
owned a general store on Main Street in Tottenville. Often called
upon to make caskets for families, the transition into the undertaking
business was a natural one. |

|
| In
1909, Isaac's son James W. Bedell, took over the business and moved
it to its present location on Amboy Road. It was then named J. W.
Bedell Undertaker and Embalmer. |

|
| In
1921, James died and the business was taken over by his son, Herbert
Bedell. Herbert had a brother and a sister who allthough were not
active in the business, they had an interest in it. It was then renamed
J. W. Bedell, Inc. The inside floor plan was re arranged to accomodate
families who wanted to utilize the funeral home facilities instead
of having calling hours at their home. |

In 1952, Joseph E. Bedell, nephew of Herbert, took over the business
after Herbert moved out of the funeral home and built a home on an
adjoining lot. In 1956, a sun porch along side of the building was
enclosed to make more space for the chapel. |

|
In
1964, a large addition was added onto the side of the building doubling
the size of the funeral home.
In 1991, Paul J. Pizzo bought the business from Joseph after managing
it for several years. It was then named Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home.
The decor of the interior is always being remodeled. We do a little
at a time in order to not inconvenience families. |
