Alphonse James Calvanico, 87 Professional engineer, founder of Calvanico Associates in Staten Island Alphonse James Calvanico, 87, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018. He was born in Brooklyn, then moved to Staten Island. He graduated from St. Agnes H.S. He then graduated from City College with a B.S. in civil engineering. After graduation, Alphonse worked in Manhattan for a number of firms, including Ebasco Services & Andrews and Clark. He then worked as the chief engineer for the Staten Island Water Department. Alphonse was the founder of Calvanico Associates in Staten Island. He worked on many award-winning projects throughout his career. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He loved his many years of playing racquetball and softball, and loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed gardening and traveling. Alphonse was an avid baseball and football fan, following the Dodgers and the New York Football Giants. He was predeceased by his loving wife of over 61 years, Helene, and his sons Richard and Robert. He is survived by his sons, Peter and Steven, and his daughters-in-law, JoAnn, Marietta and Cindy; a bother, Nickolas; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral from Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home on Friday at 9:45 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial is at St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church at 10:30 a.m. Cremation will be private. Friends may visit Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.
