Richard E. Long, 80
Played baseball and managed teams on Staten Island
Richard E. Long, 80, passed away at Staten Island University Hospital on Oct. 7, 2018.
He was born in New Dorp, then lived in Great Kills, Annadale and Tottenville. Richard graduated from New Dorp High School in 1955. He then attended Rutgers, Wagner & CSI.
He served in the National Guard and the Army Reserve.
He played baseball at New Dorp H.S., American Legion and SI Major League. He also played softball for many years.
He managed teams in GKLL, Babe Ruth League, PAL and CYO.
Richard enjoyed trips to Vegas and AC and was a longtime member of the SI Bridge Club. He enjoyed crabbing, gardening and trips to the racetrack.
Richard was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, May Passaretti, who passed away in 1995.
He is survived by his children, Eileen Simoniello, Richard V., Thomas, Timothy Long, and Ria Long-O'Donnell, amd 12 grandchildren.
A funeral home service will be held at Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
Friends may visit Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society in Richard's name would be appreciated.
