Catherine ‘Cathy’ Philp, 65, a longtime Tottenville resident, passed away on June 22, 2020 after a battle with cancer.
She was born Catherine Veronica Barto on December 9, 1954 to Francis and Annamae Barto in Charleston, Staten Island. She graduated from Tottenville High School as part of a co-op program where she also worked at the American Stock Exchange in Manhattan. She left this job to start her family and would later work as a cook and licensed food handler at Tottenville Bagel. Cathy was always strong-willed, lively, and a true social butterfly. Growing up, she was involved in numerous charitable programs around her neighborhood and loved to go out and meet new people. Her job at the deli suited her perfectly because, not only did she love to cook, she was also able to get to know just about everyone in the neighborhood. She was a creative type, and, aside from cooking, loved telling stories, ceramics, crocheting, and gardening. Most of all, though, she loved her family. Cathy touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Cathy is survived by her two sons, Michael and Peter Philp, her fiancé Vincent Zukowski, her brother Francis Barto and sister-in-law Leslie, her brother John Barto and sister-in-law Carole, her sister Rosemarie Candia and brother-in-law Joseph, her sister-in-law Claire Barto, many nieces and nephews, and her dogs Bandit and Smokey. She was predeceased by her parents Francis and Annamae Barto, her brother Richard Barto, her sister Patricia Barto, and her ex-husband Peter Philp.
She will be in repose on Thursday June 25 from 11am-1pm at Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the ASPCA in her name would be appreciated.
