Eugene O'Byrne, 82

Eugene O'Byrne, 82, of Huguenot (formerly of Prince's Bay) passed away at home on Nov. 26, 2018.
A lifelong resident of Staten Island, he was born in Grant City to Eleanor and John S. O'Byrne. He graduated from St. Christopher's, Grant City and New Dorp High School. He earned a B.S. in accounting from Baruch College and specialized in taxation. He was an enrolled agent.
He married his high school sweetheart, Brenda Russo, in 1956.
Early in his career, he worked for the B & O Railroad and for Nassau Smelting.
He joined the FDNY in 1960 and was promoted to Lieutenant. He retired from Engine 159, Dongan Hills after 35 years of service. He volunteered with other FDNY retirees to assist in the recovery efforts in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 tragedy.
Eugene was always laughing and was quick with a joke. He was often seen in his neighborhood doing his daily walk, waving and smiling to neighbors along his route. He loved to travel and he loved to learn. Post retirement, he taught computing classes at Senior Net at the JCC. He was a devoted family man and active in the church.
He is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Brenda (Russo), his four children, Linda (Mickey) Barbaria, Daniel (Sandra) O'Byrne, John (Marie) O'Byrne, Laurie O'Byrne ( Andreas Ohl), and his seven grandchildren, John, Daniel, Nicole, James, Matthew, Kristen O'Byrne, and Michael Marron.
He wass predeceased by his parents, Eleanor and John S. O'Byrne and his two siblings, John E. and Daniel O'Byrne.
Funeral from Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home on Friday at 9:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may visit Wednesday, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
