James DeProssino

May 9, 1928 — May 27, 2020

James DeProssino, 92

Salesman and Korean War Army Veteran, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, passed away on May 27, 2020 at SIUH after a brief illness.

James was born on May 9, 1928 in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, New York, to Giuseppe and Jenny (nee Bellino). He graduated from Strauber Mueller Textile High School in Carroll Gardens and then served in Iceland in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his military service, he married the love of his life Sarah and raised five children. They settled in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn, and were parishioners of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Flatlands, where he attended Mass daily until moving to Staten Island in 2014.

James is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Sarah (nee Attanasio). He is also survived by his five children, Vincent, his wife Marie, Regina Corbett and her husband Ray, Andrew, his wife Josephine, Therese Walsh and her husband Brian, and Frances DeProssino, his 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, infant sister and two older brothers, Phil and Frank.

In 1996, at age 70, he retired after a 52-year career at Macy’s department store in Herald Square NYC. He loved his family and was the family joke-teller and magician, keeping countless generations of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren entertained with his “sleight of hand”, as well as his many friends at the Esplanade Senior Residence in Staten Island, where he was dearly loved.

He and Sarah also loved vacationing in Aruba for many years where they made lifelong friendships.  It was their “little piece of paradise.”

He was an enthusiastic Yankee fan and could be found most nights from April to October watching the games with wife, Sarah, who shared his love of the game. He loved music, playing the accordion and writing poetry.  He was also artistically talented and was the resident family photographer, always taking pictures of his family, friends and nature. He loved singing old show tunes and dancing to them with Sarah. He loved watching old movies and game shows, especially Jeopardy, and always enjoyed a good meal!

He will be dearly missed!

Due to the current COVID situation, viewing and burial will be private. He will be interred at Resurrection Cemetery in Staten Island, New York.
