Mildred O. Ekstrand, 100, passed away on Feb. 19, 2020, in Eger Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family. She was born Mildred Olsen in Tottenville and lived at her current address since 1930. She was a graduate of Tottenville H.S.
Mildred worked at the former S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Co., Princes Bay until the end of World War II, when she joined Halifax Insurance Co. in Manhattan.
Mildred and her husband, Gordon, operated Ekstrand's Florist in Tottenville for 25 years, retiring in 1988.
Mildred was an avid NY Yankees fan, where her father took her to ball games to see Babe Ruth play.
She was a Past Matron of Huguenot Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Beauvais-Hudson Post 126, American Legion Auxiliary, Tottenville Chapter AARP, Mt Loretto Friendship Club, and the JJ's Social Club, the Jean Guthrie Mother's Club and a Den mother with Cub Pack 46 in Tottenville. Mildred was also a member of Bethel UM Church and served on many of the church's committees, including the Memorial Committee. She was also a Sunday School teacher and started the annual Church Cranberry Fair, which is still held in November.
Mildred has visited several countries in Europe, Canada and Hawaii, and to many of our Western National parks. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards with friends, and watching her grandchildren grow up. Family get-togethers were always a special event.
Mildred just celebrated her 100th birthday, surrounded by her loving family, friends and staff at a gathering at Eger Health Care & Rehab. Center on Oct. 26.
Surviving is her beloved husband, Gordon, whom she married on June 12, 1954, at Bethel UM Church; her loving sons, Ralph and Harry (Carol) and her grandchildren, Ralph Jr., Lynn D'Andrea (Joseph), Karl, Erik, and Amanda.
A Funeral Service will be held at Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home on Saturday at 9 a.m. Interment to follow at Bethel Cemetery.
Friends may visit on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mildred's name to Bethel UM Church Restoration Fund, would be appreciated.
