                                       Alex Neube Korean War Veteran and Beloved Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather

Longtime Staten Islander, Alex Neube, 96, passed away peacefully at home on June 25, 2026, of natural causes. A retired AT&T representative, Korean War veteran, devoted husband, loving father, and proud family man, he will be remembered for his strength, work ethic, humility, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.

Born in Suffolk, Virginia, on December 18, 1929, Alex came to Staten Island as a very young child and was raised in Sandy Ground in Rossville. Sandy Ground, founded in the 1820s by free Black families, is recognized as one of the nation’s oldest continuously inhabited free Black settlements. It was in that historic community that Alex’s roots deepened and where he met Estelle Mangin, a Sandy Ground descendant who would become the love of his life.

Alex and Estelle met as teenagers, but their plans were interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army in April 1951 during the Korean War. He served bravely on the front lines, including as a point man, and attained the rank of Corporal. When he returned home from the war, he was finally able to marry the woman he had loved for years. Together, Alex and Estelle built a life centered on faith, perseverance, and family, raising six children and creating a home filled with love and purpose.

After returning from military service, Alex went to work at Nassau Smelting and Refining Company in Tottenville, later associated with AT&T Nassau Metals. Through diligence and reliability, he advanced to become a representative for the company. He was known as a hard worker who did whatever was needed to provide for his family. At times, he worked as many as three jobs, picking up overtime at Nassau and taking on odd jobs, including digging cesspools. No matter how long or demanding the day had been, when Alex came home, he made time for his children.

His commitment was legendary. Alex never called out sick and never missed a day of work. Nothing stopped him from showing up. On one memorable occasion, when he could not open the front door, he jumped out a window so he could still get to work. That story became a lasting example of the determination, responsibility, and quiet toughness that defined him.

Above all else, Alex was a family man. He was a great role model whose family always came first. He took deep pride in his children and often said that his greatest joy in life was raising a family. Nothing mattered more to him than spending time with those he loved, and that value became one of his greatest gifts to his children. His example taught them the importance of dedication, loyalty, sacrifice, and love.

Alex had many skills and talents and would comment that he’s a jack of all trades but a master at none. He would work on cars in the neighborhood, and he could fix almost anything. He also turned out to be exceptionally skilled at woodworking, with practically most of all furniture pieces in his home was made by him!

Alex was predeceased by his beloved wife, Estelle Mangin Neube. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the values he instilled, and the many lives touched by his steady presence, generous spirit, and enduring love. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

He is survived by his six children: Alex Neube, Jr. (Redetha) of California, Wanda Neube-Marshall (Stephen) of Maryland, Darryl Neube (Mardra) of New Jersey, Gail Neube of Staten Island, Robin Cassell (Rodney) of Poughkeepsie, New York and Brian Neube (Toinette) of Virginia. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Joyce Daniels, and many nieces and nephews.
