Alfred Austin

Alfred Austin, 84, of Annadale, a former police sergeant who enjoyed the outdoors, died Sunday after a long illness in Golden Gate Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Meiers Corners, where he resided for the past three years.

Born in Manhattan, he was brought to Prince's Bay as an infant. He also lived in Tottenville before settling in Annadale 54 years ago.

Mr. Austin graduated from Tottenville High School and served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War.

He joined the NYPD in 1955 and was first stationed in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. He ended his 38-year career as a sergeant in Brooklyn Central Booking in 1993.

Mr. Austin later worked as a security guard at the former Richmond Memorial Hospital, now Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. He also drove a geriatric van for the hospital, family said. His hobbies included jogging, gardening and skiing.

Mr. Austin enjoyed vacationing in St. Simons Island, Ga.

Mr. Austin was a lifemember of the Knights of Columbus Stolzenthaler Council, Charleston, as well as the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Mary Brown; a son, Thomas; two daughters, Patricia Doherty and Geraldine Lore; seven grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
