Christopher Walsh

July 21, 1961 — August 7, 2025

Christopher Walsh, 64, passed away on August 7, 2025. A beloved community leader and friend to all he encountered, Christopher is survived by his loving wife, Pauline; daughter, Joanne; son-in-law, Neil; good friend, David; and his beloved grandchildren, Julianna (J-Rod), Markos (Stewie), Mia (Meatball), and Alessandra (Lasagna). He is also survived by his sisters, Sarah, and Annie; and brothers, Gerald, Michael, John, David, Robert, Patrick. Christopher is predeceased by his parents, John and Ann Walsh; his brother, Eddie; and his sister, Mary.

Christopher was born in Yonkers, NY and moved to Staten Island as a child. He grew up in Princess Bay where, as a teenager, was involved with coaching Youth Baseball. He ran the South Shore Touch Tackle League, the South Shore Bowling League, a Volley Ball League, and Co-Ed Softball.

In 1979 he started his own softball league, the South Shore Softball Association (SSSA), which he ran for 44 years. Under Chris’ supervision, the league paid for and reconstructed the I.S. 34 field, adding drains, water pipes, infield dirt and grass, making it the premiere softball field of the South Shore. He ran the Memorial All Star Games every year for members of the league who passed on too soon.

Christopher organized trips to ballparks all over the country to see the Yankees/Mets and experience unique venues in various cities. He organized yearly trips for 22 years to Puerto Rico to play softball in many municipalities, most importantly, Isabela, where he received the key to the city from Mayor Miguel ”Ricky” Méndez Pérez, for making it a friendly sportsmanship union between the United States and Puerto Rico.

Christopher was inducted to the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame as an unsung hero, and he was also inducted into the Staten Island Amateur Softball Hall of Fame for honors as League Director of SSSA.

Christopher ran for the South Shore NYC Council seat against then-Councilman Vincent Ignizio. Although he lost the political race, he gained a friend in Ignizio. Under Christopher’s supervision, the SSSA, along with Ignizio and Catholic Charities, reconstructed the field at Mount Loretto, including installing lights for night games. The field at Mount Loretto was available for all leagues to play on.

Christopher Walsh was a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1730 (Inland Terminal Workers) for three decades and served as President for several years. Later on, he became a member of the NYC Department of Sanitation, retiring in 2023.

Christopher would always make it a priority to serve as a delivery man for Carrot Top Pastries, delivering, as he would say, “the best carrot muffins”, and Holtermann’s Bakery’s bow-ties to very grateful friends and family during the holidays.

He will be missed beyond measure. May he rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chris's name to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
