Dorothy M. Calkins

Our dear mother, Dorothy Calkins of Tottenville, Staten Island, New York and Manahawkin, New Jersey, sadly passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2023 at the age of 95 with her family at her side. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Martin Calkins, Sr. and sons, Martin Calkins, Jr., Richard Calkins, Sr. and grandson, Timothy Calkins, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia ( Rick) Corle and Barbara (David) Duryea, Sons, Thomas (Nancy) Calkins, Sr., Timothy (Robin) Calkins, Sr., and Kenneth Calkins and 14 Grandchildren and 18 Greatgrandchildren, and her sister Jeanne.

Dorothy was born on December 19, 1927 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She worked for many years as an Executive Secretary for the Archdiocese of New York - Mission of the Immaculate Virgin at Mount Loretto in Staten Island, New York. In her retired years, Dorothy volunteered at her beloved parish, Our Lady Help of Christians, taking care of the flowers on the altar after daily mass and various other duties. Her door was always open for anyone who needed someone to talk to, a cup of tea or a friend. Her most valuable role was being a Mother, Grandmother and Great grandmother and she treasured spending time with her family and friends.

She was lovingly called Dottie, Dot and Little Dot and was the most loving, caring, kindest, strongest and generous person you would ever meet. Heaven has gained the most beautiful angel and she will be greatly missed.

Her many interests included dancing, sewing, cooking, walking, shopping, church, going to movies and theater, eating out and listening to Frank Sinatra and the Sound of Music.

During the last few years she was loved and cared for by her family at The Residence in Manahawkin, New Jersey. 

Arrangements:  Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, 7447 Amboy Road, Staten Island, NY 10307 from 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM, Sunday, September 17, 2023.

Funeral Mass on Monday, September 18, 2023 at 10:00 AM, Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, 7396 Amboy Road, Staten Island, NY 10307. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
