Dorothy Helen (Walters) Johnston, 88

Sixth Generation of Totten Family

Dorothy Helen (Walters) Johnston, 88, of Tottenville, loving wife and mother passed away Wednesday at home.

Born in the Charleston section of Staten Island, she was known by her friends, as Dottie. She was proud to be, on her father's side as the grand daughter of Laura Totten Walters, the 6th generation of the Totten Family. Raised in Tottenville, she lived the majority of her life there, first on Yetman Avenue, then for the last 58 years on Main St.
Having attended Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC), Tottenville High School and Chase College (NYC) she worked in Manhattan in the maritime shipping industry and then for the Plainfield (NJ) Country Club till she became a homemaker. Active in her church, OLHC, most recently having served as an usher, she was a founding member and first President of the mother's club, the Mater Christi Guild, among other offices held over 18 years. She was also active in, and served in numerous offices for the Rosary and Altar Society. Outside of OLHC Dottie served as the Special Events Coordinator for Mount Augustine Apostolic Center.
As a homemaker she loved to cook big meals for her family, try new recipes and share dishes with her neighbors. She enjoyed going to AC, golfed as a member of the ladies golf club at LaTourette Golf Course, was an avid poker player and accomplished bowler. She especially enjoyed game shows both playing along with those on TV and at home with the family, which ultimately lead to appearing on Family Feud in 1983. However, her favorite pastime was sitting on her front porch, as the Mayor of Main St. talking with passers-by about Tottenville and Staten Island, and the way it used to be.

Predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Russell H., son Russell W., parents Helen (Kelly) Walters and Dave Pickles Walters, sister, Barbara Dorrell, and her first husband Donald H. Vanderbush, she is survived by her daughters Judith Sarsten (Paul), Patricia "PJ" Miller (Mark), and Carol Ericksen (Alf), 11 grandchildren, 8+ great-grandchildren, her sister Judith V. Schmidt and numerous nieces, nephews and loved ones.
In lieu of flowers contributions in Dottie's name to Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, 7396 Amboy Rd, Staten Island, NY 10307 would be appreciated
