Henry Charles Carstens, a devoted family man, lifelong resident of Tottenville, Staten Island, and a beacon of patience and kindness, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love and quiet strength. Born on August 7, 1943, to Charles and Maria Carstens, Henry grew up alongside his older brother George, who predeceased him, in the home he would cherish for his entire life, rooting his family in the warmth of tradition and community.
Henry is survived by his beloved wife, Rosa Carstens, with whom he shared a lifetime of unwavering companionship. He leaves behind his adoring children: Eileen Schirripa and her husband Giuseppe, Lisa Errigo and her husband Phill, and Paul Carstens and his wife Krissy. His greatest joy, however, was his five grandchildren, Charley, Vienna, Luna, Evee, and Joseph Rocco, whom he loved with a tender affection that will forever echo in their hearts. He was also a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews, especially Rosita Gonzales, who lived with the family for many years.
Henry proudly served in the United States Navy as a Construction Electrician's Mate (Wiring) Constructionman until his honorable discharge in 1967. A dedicated member of the American Legion, he carried his sense of duty and camaraderie throughout his life. He went on to build a remarkable career as an MTA bus driver for 20 years, navigating the streets of New York City with impeccable safety, never once involved in an accident. Later, he worked as a doorman at the Bay Street Landing building in St. George, where his warm smile and kind nature endeared him to the residents he served. Above all, Henry was a man of profound faith, a devoted parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians, where his Catholic devotion guided him with grace and humility. His generosity extended to supporting many Catholic charities, including Tunnels to Towers, EWTN, Priests for Life, and Sacred Heart Southern Missions.
His heart found immense happiness in his upstate home, where he created cherished memories with dear friends. Henry enjoyed his travels to Peru, visiting his in-laws and creating wonderful memories. You could always catch him cheering on the New York Yankees or watching "Gunsmoke" reruns, or listening to Elvis.
The family invites friends to remember Henry through acts of kindness, reflecting the patient soul who touched so many lives. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit lives on in the love he so generously gave.
