Jane Leeds, 73, lovingly known as “Baby Jane,” passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family.
Jane was born in Brooklyn, NY, and was the youngest of seven children born to the late Patrick and Margaret “Dolly” McMahon. Being the baby of the family shaped her spirited personality from the start. She was smart, determined, loving, and never afraid to stand her ground. She always brought her infectious smile into the room and loved to laugh and enjoy life. Her empathy for people and animals knew no limits. If you were a puppy in her home you were treated like royalty.
Though she was the baby of the family, Jane was never underestimated. Jane was tenacious, deep loving, and watched over the people she cared for. Her “no stone unturned” mindset was perfect for her 45-year career as a medical technologist working in the lab at Victory Memorial Hospital and Staten Island University. Jane was often the one we turned to for reviewing medical labs, offering medical advice, or gently drawing blood for the faint of heart among us. Jane did all of this while perfectly putting on her lipstick without a mirror and a smile on her face. Her qualities earned her the affectionate nickname, “Smitty the Bulldog.”
On July 12, 1992, Jane married the love of her life, Charlie Leeds. Together they enjoyed a beautiful life of traveling to Hawaii, Aruba, Jackson Hole and Europe. They even experienced a month-long cross-country road trip. When not traveling, they enjoyed spending their summer days at home pool-side with family and friends. Charlie passed away on April 1, 2024. Jane continued to carry their love in her heart.
Jane leaves behind her siblings; Veronica Lanigan, Mary McMahon, Dolores McMahon, John McMahon, and her sister-in-law Carol McMahon. We will miss the sound of her laughter, the sparkle of her smile, and her love for conversation. She also leaves behind her loving nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews who treasured their fun-loving aunt.
Jane is now reunited with her beloved husband Charlie, her brother Robert McMahon, sister Patricia McMahon, and her favorite brothers-in-law, Richard Ekelund and Thomas Lanigan, and her parents. They have all surely welcomed their “Baby Jane” home.
