John O'Shaughnessy, 64
Beloved father and dedicated family man
John O'Shaughnessy, 64, a lifetime resident of Staten Island passed away July 8, 2019, at a family reunion in Brainerd, Minn., due to complications from a recent illness.
The son of Patrick and Mary O'Shaughnessy, John was born on Nov. 8, 1954, on Long Island, and shortly moved to Staten Island afterwards.
He graduated from St. Patrick's School and Monsignor Farrell High School before earning his bachelor's degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
He worked for the Staten Island Railway for 34 years as a supervisor, teacher and train dispatcher.
His family would describe him as a jack-of-all-trades, woodworker and handyman who would do anything to help the people around him. He had a legendary work ethic that was exclusively motivated by improving the lives of his family and friends.
He married the love of his life, Beverly Beyar-O'Shaughnessy, on Aug. 11, 1990, and raised children in Tottenville, coaching CYO basketball for O.L.H.C. for five years and T-ball at South Shore Little League.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two sons, Sean and Kevin; adopted nephew, Daniel; his brothers, Joe, Eugene and Dan; his sisters, Peggy, Eileen, Cathy and Hyunza; late brother and sister, Maureen and Patrick, and an extended family that includes 33 nieces and nephews and 22 great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral is from Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, 7447 Amboy Rd., on Saturday at 10 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Help of Christian's R.C. Church at 10:30 a.m. Cremation will be private.
Friends may visit on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.
