Joseph W. Hegel

Joseph “Joe” Hegel, 89, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026.

Joe was born and raised in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City.

After proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force, Joe went on to work for Lockheed Corporation before finding his true calling in public service. He joined the New York City Police Department, eventually becoming a proud member of the NYPD Mounted Police. He loved his time with the horses, participating in numerous parades and horse shows throughout the city.

In 1970, Joe married the love of his life, Helene Krishok. The couple settled in Staten Island, where they built a wonderful life together and raised their family.

Joe was an avid boxing fan—enjoying the sport no matter what language it was broadcast in—and could frequently be found obsessed over a crossword puzzle. He loved his baked clams and a good glass of Merlot, and in his younger years, no car repair or home project was as too big for Joe to tackle. Because he lived such an extraordinary life, he was a naturally gifted storyteller whom everyone loved to listen to.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Anna Moore, and his brothers, Andrew, Raymond, and Kenneth. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Helene; his daughter, Colleen, and her husband, Christopher; his son, Joseph; and his cherished granddaughter, Ava. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Michael, sister-in-law Joann, and many loving nieces and nephews whom he adored.
