Joseph J. Kosinski, 93

Loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather

Joseph J. Kosinski passed away peacefully at home on December 25, 2021.  He was pre-deceased by his wife of 63 years, Helen R. Kosinski.  He is survived by their four children, Dorothy Ann Carola, Katherine M. Schacht, Joseph W. Kosinski and John F. Kosinski.  He will be greatly missed by his 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Joe enjoyed a 27-year career with The New York Times, interrupted only by his call to serve in the U.S. Army from 1950-52.  At The Times, he worked his way up from office boy to the Accounting department, and ultimately to Newsprint Transportation Manager.  Early in his career, and under the G.I. Bill, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Pace College.

Upon leaving his employ at The Times, Joe brokered the sale of used printing equipment, ran a successful printing business, and worked as Night Security Supervisor at then-St. Vincent’s Hospital.

A Tottenville resident since his marriage in 1954, Joe was always an active parishioner at O.L.H.C. parish, and until his passing, held the distinction of being the oldest male parishioner.  As a member of the Holy Name Society, he helped organize and run bazaars, work parties, communion breakfasts, and entertainment fund raisers.  For many years he helped provide all manner of printed materials for the parish, typesetting and running the press in the parish print shop.  He served in the ministry of Lector for 45 years, during which time he prepared about forty others to do the same.  When the original church was lost to fire in 1985, Joe chaired the fundraising committee for the rebuilding effort.

In his retirement years, Joe and Helen enjoyed travelling to reunions with army buddies from Fox Company and the 169th Infantry Regiment, as well as spending time with family.  A highlight of many recent years has been a December event dubbed “Kosinski Christmas,” when the family would gather for a holiday celebration grown too large for their home to accommodate.  His passing on Christmas day gives new meaning to that designation.
