Marie A. Pompei, 81, passed away on August 18, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.
Marie was a lifelong Staten Islander, born and raised in the Westerleigh section of Staten Island. Marie attended Blessed Sacrament Parochial School and graduated in 1958. She went on to attend Saint Peter’s Girls High School and graduated in 1962. Upon graduating, she began her career working for AT&T and briefly began a novitiate with the Sisters of Charity for six months. Life took her in a different direction and she had a productive working life in several industries. She taught briefly in the 1960’s at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parochial School. She worked in Manhattan for Home Insurance and later on began a 30+ year career working for IBM. She received various awards while working for IBM. At this time she had met her future husband, Francis Pompei, while also being a member of the Staten Island Catholic Club.
Marie and Francis were married in 1971 and settled in the Prince’s Bay section of Staten Island. In 1978, they welcomed their son, Anthony. Marie’s focus centered around her home and family. Marie continued to work for IBM until she became ill with meningitis and encephalitis. Due to her illness, she resigned from IBM but continued to have a working life working for Saint Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center and Community Agency for Senior Citizens.
Marie also volunteered with several organizations. She was a member of the choir of Our Lady Star of the Sea. She was a Eucharistic Minister for Carmel Richmond Rehabilitation Center. She volunteered with the Staten Island Symphony. She was also a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. In her spare time, she enjoyed doing Crosswords puzzles, Word Jumbos, reading, and going on many vacations and cruises with family and her friends, Gail and Joseph O’Brien.
Marie is predeceased by her parents, James and Maud Solomon and her nephew and godson, Michael J. Murphy.
Marie is survived by her husband, Francis Pompei, her son Anthony, her sister, Louise, her niece Kathleen and husband Craig Harty, her nephew Kenneth and wife Wendi Murphy and three great nephews, Patrick Harty, Liam Harty, Thomas Murphy, one great niece, Emma Murphy and her sister-in-law, Paulette Levye.
