Mary Vierno

June 3, 1937 — August 20, 2017

Mary Helen Vierno passed away peacefully at home early in the morning of August 20th, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Staten Island on June 3, 1937. She graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1955 and started her career as an executive secretary in Manhattan until her marriage to George R. Vierno Sr. in 1966. She was a caring and nurturing mother to her children, Stephanie Ann and George Robert. In the 1980s, she worked as a matron for special needs children on the school bus lines. She was dedicated to her parish, Our Lady Star of the Sea, and volunteered in multiple capacities for over 30 years, including serving as a Eucharistic Minister and a Teacher's aide. She loved playing cards and cooking for her grandchildren, and enjoyed her daily trips to Mass and the supermarket, and watching her beloved Yankees. She was filled with pride by the accomplishments of her husband and daughter, for which the George R Vierno Center (Riker's Island) and the Stephanie A. Vierno School/PS 41 (Staten Island) are named. She is predeceased by her parents, Umberto (1980) and Helen (1983) Giardino, husband George (1990), and daughter Stephanie (2013). She is survived by her devoted son, George Jr., daughter-in-law, Lori Ann, and her granddaughters (who were her precious angels), Nicole and Lauren. She is also survived by her beloved sister Helen Joan Marzinke (Mathew), brother Sebastian "Butch" Giardino (Christine), sister-in-law Carol Burke, and her nieces and nephews: Albert, Lucy, Melanie, Mathew, Mark and Melissa, John, John and Richard.
