Maureen Martyka

July 23, 1935 — April 5, 2026

Mary P. Martyka (nee: Ryan), commonly known as Maureen, passed away on April 5, 2026 at the age of 90.

Maureen’s parents were born in Ireland and came to the United States in the early 1900’s through Ellis Island. They both became United States citizens and lived in Brooklyn, New York where they started their family. When Maureen was a young girl, the family relocated to the South Shore of Staten Island. They settled in Tottenville where Maureen attended Tottenville High School. She met Stanley (a Staten Island native) and they were married in 1955. Together, they started their own family.

Maureen led a very active life. Maureen began working as a crossing guard when her children were of school age. She then went onto become a cafeteria worker at Our Lady Help of Christians and finally working in the same field for the Board of Education until her retirement in the 1990’s.

Maureen and her family were longtime members of the South Shore Swim Club, where she and her husband spent many years on their Board of Directors. She also spent many years on the Altar Society at Our Lady Help of Christian’s Church. She joined the LAOH, Division 4 and was actively involved in many of their fundraising functions. She was a member of AARP also.

In her younger years she loved playing softball and tennis. One of her greatest loves was to travel, especially to Ireland to visit many of her family members still living there.

Maureen is pre-deceased by her husband of 50+ years, Stanley; her parents: Matthew Ryan and Mary Cunnane Ryan; her brother: Michael Ryan; and her sister: Eileen Ryan Bungarz.

She is survived by her daughters: Barbara Martyka (Charles Brodbeck), and Gina Martyka; Grandsons: Donald J.(ToniAnn) Amundsen, Jr., Brian J. Swenson, Erik M. Swenson; Great Grandsons: Joseph D. Amundsen, Jax A. Amundsen, Kayden JP Swenson; Brothers: John (Gail) Ryan, Thomas (Penny) Ryan: Sister: Theresa Ryan Fogt (Eric); Sister-In-Law: Joanne Ryan (Michael’s wife); many Nieces and Nephews and Great Nieces and Nephews.
