Robert "Bob" Baumann, 76, passed away on July 4, 2026, after a life full of happiness, dedication, and love for his family and friends.
Bob was born in Staten Island, New York, on October 14, 1949, and continued to be raised there on Lindbergh Avenue. He attended Curtis High School, where he played baseball, and later went onto Wagner College to study and finally completed his masters at NYU for health education.
Throughout his life, Bob enjoyed a mix of hobbies, including baseball, ice hockey, skiing, scuba diving, and grilling. He was an animal lover, having multiple pets throughout his life, but having a special love for his dogs.
He proudly served as a New York City Firefighter for 29 years and achieved the rank of Captain. Following in the steps of his grandfather and older brother, Bob served in multiple houses over his career, at Ladder 114, Engine 219, Ladder 105, and finally Ladder 148. He served at Ground Zero following the September 11, 2001 attacks, being an active member participating in the rescue and clean up mission at Ground Zero. Bob was beloved by rookies, subordinates, ranking officers, and peers alike, all of whom had a unique story about his legendary personality.
In addition to firefighting, Bob was well known for his work as with general construction, most notably in roofing. Respected for his great service, and sociable demeanor, his success in this field was a testament to his skill and work ethic.
After retiring from the FDNY in 2002, Bob continued roofing and doing general construction work, along with being an active volunteer with the Tunnels to Towers Foundation. Bob’s dedication to the Tunnels to Towers foundation spanned years, from his enthusiastic involvement in the yearly 5K race and golf outings, to travelling around the country with the moving exhibit, and actively participating in all fundraisers, his commitment to the foundation was unmatched.
His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family during Friday night pizza dinners or grilling on Sunday’s, the time spent with his animals, his yearly ski trips to Mont Tremblant, and his volunteer work with Tunnels to Towers. Bob will always be remembered for his outgoing nature, his great stories, and the energy he brought to any event he attended.
Bob leaves behind a full FDNY career, a lifetime of hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Mary; and his brother Herman. He is survived by his wife, Francine; his children, Alexandra, Kristin and Dakota; and his sister Patricia.
Donations to Tunnels to Towers in lieu of flowers would be greatly appreciated.
