Mr. Ostwald began his business career at the former family-owned Uniforms by Ostwald in New Brighton, a nationally known maker of band uniforms, but struck out on his own, founding Ostwald Industries, a designer and manufacturer of equipment for automated printing presses, located in Great Kills and Annadale.

He later became a partner in the printing firm Rush Index Tabs in East Rutherford, N.J., a position he held for 25 years, until retiring in 2000.

While on the Island, Mr. Ostwald served as a member of the board of the North Shore YMCA. He also was a member of the board of trustees of the former Asbury Methodist Church, New Springville, and the former Wesley Methodist Church, Eltingville.

He was a longtime steam car enthusiast and was in the process of restoring a 1917 Stanley Steamer.

Mr. Ostwald's wife of 53 years, the former Edith Johnson, died in 2005.

Surviving are his sons, David and Douglas, and his daughter, Alice Ostwald.

The funeral service will be tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Arrangements include private cremation.
