Samuel Weening

January 15, 1926 — April 9, 2022

Navy veteran, Mason, native Staten Islander, 96 Samuel Thomas Weening passed away on April 9, 2022 and was 96 years old. A native Staten Islander, Sam Weening was born on January 15, 1926 at the old Richmond Memorial Hospital in Prince's Bay. He was the second of three children born to Fannie (Laird) and Samuel Weening of Tottenville. Sam attended PS1 and graduated from Tottenville High School in 1944. After graduating from THS, Sam attended Dartmouth College before enlisting in the US Navy. While in the Navy during World War II, Sam served on the destroyer USS Cony (DD 508) in the South Pacific. Sam returned to the US in early 1946 and enrolled in Wagner College on Staten Island. After graduating Wagner with a BS in Education in 1950, Sam went on to receive a master's degree in Education at Wagner College before being called up from the Navy Reserves to see active duty during the Korean War. After the end of the Korean War, he returned to Staten Island and married Elleneva Kamp who was also from Tottenville, and the two were married in June 1954. Being a Mason was especially important to Sam who was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years, having been a member of Great Kills Lodge # 912 where he became Master of the Lodge and was a past Richmond County District Deputy Grand Master. Sam was deeply religious and attended St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Eltingville for many years where he was active in the Church's Vestry and choir, until he became disabled.

He was predeceased by his parents, and his wife of 55 years, Elleneva, who passed away in 2009. He was also predeceased by his brother Charles Weening and his sister Anne Pistek. Sam is survived by his son Robert and his wife Susan, his daughter Christine Belinfante and 5 grandchildren, Reuben, Rebecca, Matthew, Peter and Rachel Oliva, his sister-in-law Harriet Lee Weening and several nephews, nieces and great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, located at 7447 Amboy Road Staten Island, New York 10307 on Tuesday April 12th, 2022 from 2 pm to 4 pm and from 7 pm to 9 pm. A Funeral mass will take place at St Albans Episcopal Church located at 76 Saint Albans Place Staten Island, New York 10312 at 10 am.  Private Cremation.
